Lena Claesson-Welsh awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal in gold 2016

As one out of five laureates Lena Claesson-Welsh has been selected as Gustaf Adolf medallist 2016.

The medal is awarded someone who has been Dean for a long period of time, to a Head of Department who has initiated and directed particularly important activities, and to individuals who have performed significant and longstanding investigative work.

The prize is motivated with: Lena Claesson-Welsh is a successful and creative experimental cancer researcher, who has studied blood vessel development in tumours and the possibility to reduce tumour growth by affecting vessel formation. Lena Claesson-Welsh has had several management assignments at Uppsala University such as vice dean and chair for postgraduate education at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (2000-2006) and Head of Department for the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (2008-2014). Presently, she is acting co-director for Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). Lena Claesson-Welsh’s leadership is characterised by convincing argumentation and determination, combined with social skills.

The other recipients of the Gustaf Adolf medal in gold 2016 are Mikael Stenmark, Yvonne Brandt Andersson and Kerstin Jacobsson. Lennart Ilke is awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal in silver.
