In July 2022, the Faculty of Pharmacy welcomes 200 PhD students and 70 researchers from all over Europe to ULLA Summer School, a meeting place that brings together the future leaders in international pharmacy. Since launching in London in 1993, this biannual event has grown into a flagship of the ULLA network - a knowledge consortium that unites ten of Europe's top pharmaceutical research institutes where a well-executed summer school entails invaluable goodwill for the host university.
“Our faculty arranged a digital and much appreciated ULLA Summer School in 2021. Now we have the consortium's trust to host it again this year, which provides us a unique opportunity to create both new and lasting ties. The preparations are far advanced and we meet a great deal of commitment, both within our own faculty and in the ULLA consortium,” says Ulf Göransson, Professor of Pharmacognosy.

The summer school's hallmark is an intensive week with courses of the highest international class and poster sessions where the PhD students present their own research. This year's program has the working title Challenges and opportunities in drug development and the organizing committee is following a number of interesting leads for courses, while also engaging in dialogue with potential partners about the possibilities of conducting study visits and laboratory work in Uppsala's many high-tech life science environments.
“Participating in international conferences is one of the best things about being a PhD student. Socialising at such close range can lead to lifelong friendships and collaborations, and of course we also attach great importance to the social aspect. We have given our PhD students free rein to show Uppsala and the region from its absolute best side, and I am sure that in July we will all experience a unique summer school that adds important values to both tradition and future,” says Ulf Göransson.
