Present your research at SciFest 2021

The Uppsala science festival SciFest goes digital. March 1–6, 2021, researchers from Uppsala University and curious schoolchildren and adults from all over Sweden will meet for a variety of lectures, shows and activities. As a researcher at the Faculty of Pharmacy, you can now register your participation.

Preparations for SciFest 2021 has started. Uppsala's largest science festival, which each year attracts almost 8,000 curious schoolchildren and adults, will be digital for the first time. A change that will open up the event to even more participants, giving the participating researchers new tools to showcase their work.

“The fact that we are moving SciFest online means that we can welcome school classes from all over Sweden. The digital format also means greater freedom and more opportunities for each individual exhibitor. We are currently building a common event system, where each participant will have their own digital stand where they can offer live or pre-recorded workshops and presentations,” says Katarina Garpenstrand, project leader at Uppsala University.

Christel Bergström, professor at the Department of Pharmacy, and her research group have participated in three previous editions of SciFest. Using VR glasses, simulated intestinal fluid and practical labs, they help students explore the solubility of drugs.

“SciFest is an extremely inspiring opportunity to meet and interact with curious children, youths and adults. It also gives us as a group an opportunity to develop how we present and make available our work and our results in a larger societal perspective. SciFest is simply an arena with great added value for both exhibitors and visitors.”

As in previous years, SciFest 2021 will offer a diversity of lectures, shows, hands-on activities and competitions. The ambition is to transfer the festival feeling that has come to characterize the events in Fyrishov and to show how fun science can be.

“Our experience is that the simple presentations and projects work best at SciFest. Focusing on limited issues and flexible material that can be adapted to both schoolstudents and adults, I am convinced that each meeting will work just as well in a digital context.”

The festival is adapted to the national school curriculum and SciFest's primary task is to arouse students' curiosity about science and research - and hopefully at a young age plant an interest to one day study at Uppsala University.

“As researchers, we share the responsibility to create understanding and commitment to a knowledge-driven society, and SciFest gives us an arena to meet the school students who make up tomorrow's researchers. The fact that SciFest 2021 will be digital increases our university's reach far beyond Uppsala's borders thus adding several new values,” says Christel Bergström, who is also Deputy Dean for Collaboration within the disciplinary domain of medicine and pharmacy.
