The Faculty of Pharmacy commemorates World Tuberculosis Day 2022
Every year on 24 March, World Tuberculosis Day is commemorated with the aim of raising public awareness of the consequences of tuberculosis, a disease that is primarily treated with a combination of antibiotics, but with increasing antimicrobial resistance mortality rates are increasing in several countries.
“Since the 1960s, only three new drugs have been developed against tuberculosis. This is far from enough and every year 1.5 million people die from the disease, says Ulrika Simonsson, Professor of Pharmacokinetics at Uppsala University.
Ulrika and her research team at the Faculty of Pharmacy are currently working within the frameworks of ERA4TB and UNITE4TB, two international consortia that develop new antibiotic candidates, new clinical phase 2 studies and new treatments for tuberculosis.
“These initiatives are necessary to meet the global threat we are facing, and that a significant part of our funding is earmarked for postgraduate education confirm that we are following a long-term strategy,” states Ulrika Simonsson.
