Two new awards to researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy
Maria Karlgren and Christine Wegler, researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy, receive awards for their work contributing to reduce the number of animal studies and increased knowledge about drug disposition in the liver and small intestine.

Maria Karlgren, researcher in drug delivery, is awarded the 2020 Global 3Rs Award by AAALAC International and IQ, two non-profit organisations that promote innovation and quality in pharmaceutical development and humane treatment of animals in science.

Maria Karlgren recently launched a new model that can determine whether a substance interacts with the protein BCRP - an important transporter of drugs and which also has a central function for interaction between different drugs. A result that, added to two of Karlgren's previous works, contributes to reducing the need for animal studies.
“To reduce the number of animal studies in drug development is a central aspect of our research. I am therefore both grateful and honored that AAALAC and IQ with this award acknowledge our work in this area, says Maria Karlgren.
Christine Wegler, researcher in Drug delivery, receives the Rosenö Award 2019–2020. The prize, awarded by the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society, draws attention to this year's best doctoral thesis in drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics, presented at a Swedish University. Christine Wegler receives the prize for her dissertation Proteomics-informed analysis of drug disposition in the human liver and small intestine.

“It was a very enjoyable message and a nice recognition that the research I and my colleagues have conducted over the past five years is important for the pharmaceutical industry and for drug-oriented research, says Christine Wegler.
The motivation for the Rosenö Award emphasizes the high quality of the thesis and Christine Wegler's excellence in the communication of science and research. The award is sponsored by AstraZeneca, Admescope Sweden and Pharmatheus.
