Giuliano Di Baldassarre, professor in environmental analysis, new Head of programme of the Air, Water and Landscape Research Programme.

Giuliano Di Baldassarre, Professor of Hydrology, is the new Head of programme of the Air, Water and Landscape Research Programme (LUVAL) at the Department of Earth Sciences. Giuliano Di Baldassarre takes over from Veijo Pohjola.

For each research programme at Uppsala University there is a professor that is the Head of programme. The Head of programme is responsible for the organisation and quality of research within the research programme and plans and implements the activities based on the resources made available through decisions by the head of department and the department board.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I started my journey in environmental engineering in Bologna, where I developed a strong interest in hydrology. This passion led me to pursue a PhD and later build my career across Europe, from Italy to Sweden with experiences in England and the Netherlands along the way. The devastating earthquake that hit my hometown of L'Aquila in 2009 deeply affected me and sparked a strong interest in disaster research.

What are you researching today?

My research focuses on the interaction between water-related disasters and society, with the aim of informing the development of sustainable flood and drought risk reduction strategies.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am looking forward to being the Head of programme of LUVAL, where we have a dynamic research environment. Our team is working together to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges, including climate change, sustainability, energy, natural hazards and water resources. In my new role, I am committed to continuing to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and ensuring that our efforts reflect the diverse perspectives and talents of our society.
