A new European research project, CLIMES (Understanding and Predicting Impacts of Climate Extremes under Global Change), has been awarded €4.2 million by the European Commission's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Programme, with Gabriele Messori as coordinator. Of this sum, approximately EUR 1.15 million will go to Uppsala University.
The project aims to deepen the understanding of how climate extremes affect different sectors of society in a time of global change. The project will train 14 PhD students to become future climate impact experts, focusing on improved data collection, innovative risk assessments and the development of predictions for climate-related impacts.
The project is multidisciplinary and involves 27 partners from across Europe, including universities, businesses, public authorities and civil society organisations. It will combine expertise in climate science, hydrology, urban sociology, electrical engineering, computer science and epidemiology. Advanced AI tools, including natural language processing (NLP), will be used to analyse and predict the impacts of climate extremes.
The project represents a significant step towards better preparedness and adaptation to a changing climate in Europe and globally.
