The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) is a European research infrastructure with a network of field stations that continuously measure carbon dioxide fluxes over sea and land. Now Östergarnsholm has been approved quality reviewed and approved within ICOS.

The Swedish ICOS stations consist of three high masts for atmospheric measurements, two sea-based stations (including mast measurements, buoys and a ship line) where the carbon dioxide concentration in the water and the gas exchange with the sea are measured, and six ecosystem stations spread over forest, wetland and agricultural land. ICOS stations also make complementary measurements to provide information on the interactions between the atmosphere, soil/ocean and vegetation and, in some cases, runoff.
