Facts
Strengthening in the field of engineering until a new scientific council is in place

In its 2024 research and innovation bill, the government recommended dividing the Swedish Research Council's scientific council for natural sciences and engineering into two parts. This will provide greater opportunities to focus on specific needs in each area.

As it takes time to establish a new scientific council, the Swedish Research Council has set up a committee for engineering science for a transitional period, with a mandate from 1 October 2025 to 31 December 2027. The secretary general for engineering science is Marika Edoff, professor of solid-state electronics at Uppsala University.

The committee's main task is to manage the new initiatives in the field of technology for which the Swedish Research Council has been given responsibility in the research policy bill. The initiative for clusters of excellence for groundbreaking technology is one example. During the committee's term of office, the Scientific Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering will continue its activities as before. The committee and the scientific council will work closely together on common issues.
