Johan Nilsson, researcher at Uppsala University appointed to the space agency ESA´s advisory group
Dr Johan Nilsson, researcher at the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University, has been selected to join the Mission Advisory Group (MAG) for the upcoming Copernicus Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography Mission within the European Space Agency (ESA).
Johan Nilsson, researcher in physical geography at the Department of Earth Sciences, within the Air, Water, and Landscape Sciences research program.
Johan Nilsson has 15 years of experience in remote sensing of the cryosphere using satellite and airborne altimetry. His research focuses on the mass balance of ice sheets and glaciers, submarine basal melting of ice shelves, and improved firn modelling for reliable altimetry-based mass balance calculations. He also has expertise in GNSS, gravimetry, and imaging sensor data related to geodesy, geodynamics, hydrology, subglacial hydrology, and global sea-level rise.
The Mission Advisory Group brings together international experts who provide scientific guidance for the development of future satellite missions. The Sentinel-3 Next Generation Topography Mission aims to improve observations of oceans, ice, inland waters, and Earth’s topography through advanced satellite measurements with higher precision and resolution than previous generations.
The mission’s data will support research on topics such as sea-level change, climate development, extreme weather events, and dynamic Earth system processes.
The appointment gives Johan Nilsson the opportunity to contribute to the scientific direction and development of one of Europe’s future Earth observation missions within the Copernicus programme.
