Climate and sustainability researchers from around the world are coming to Uppsala – the public is welcome
When around 450 climate and sustainability researchers gather in Uppsala for the Nordic sustainability conference NESS 2026, parts of the programme will be open to the public. Residents of Uppsala are invited to take part in open discussions and activities focusing on climate, sustainability and societal transition.

The Nordic sustainability conference NESS 2026 will be held at Uppsala University from 9 to 11 June. Around 450 researchers from the Nordic region and the rest of the world will gather to discuss climate, sustainability and societal transition. As part of the conference, a number of activities will be open to the public under the heading ‘Science in the City’.
The programme includes open seminars in the University Main Building, a public event at Uppsala City Library on polarisation and climate issues, and “Coffee with Researchers” in the Linnaeus Garden, where visitors can meet international researchers for informal conversations on topics such as climate justice, wetlands, the green transition and sustainable development.
All activities are free of charge.
Mikael Kalsson is an associate professor of environmental science and a senior lecturer in climate leadership, and is a member of the conference organising committee.
– Environmental issues affect us all. The more people who get involved in sustainable development, the smoother the transition is likely to be. Citizens, businesses and organisations have the knowledge and ideas that are needed. These are important complements to academic knowledge. That is why we want to create meeting places between researchers and other stakeholders. We hope that people with different experiences, views and questions will want to take part. The sustainability challenges are not just about science and technology, but also about values, priorities and the kind of future we want to create. About NESS 2026
NESS (Nordic Environmental Social Science Conference) is the Nordic region’s largest conference for research on the environment, sustainability and societal transition. The conference brings together researchers, PhD students and practitioners from across the Nordic region and other parts of the world to discuss current sustainability challenges and possible solutions.
NESS 2026 will be held at Uppsala University on 9–11 June and is expected to attract around 450 participants. This year’s theme is how societies can transition to meet climate and sustainability challenges in a fair and sustainable way.
