Lina, tell us more.

-We have surveyed all different types of aquaculture around Zanzibar, Tanzania. We identified seaweed farming to be the predominant aquaculture, while farming of finfish, crab, pearl oyster, sea cucumber, sponge and coral is little developed. We have interviewed farmers, mapped the distribution of the different types of aquaculture as well as analyzed the institutional framework to better understand the challenges and future prospects. We show that the sector remains underdeveloped due to technical, economical and institutional limitations despite natural capacity, and that profitable production, well-developed value chains and effective governance are critical for sustainable expansion.
