Rationing of goods such as meat and fuel can both effectively and fairly reduce consumption that has a high climate impact. In addition, almost 40 per cent of the public say they accept such measures. This is according to new research from the Climate Leadership Group at Uppsala University in a study published in the Nature journal Humanities & Social Sciences Communications.

- Rationing may seem dramatic, but so is climate change. That may explain why support is high after all. And one advantage is that rationing can be perceived as fair, if it is done regardless of income. Fair policies often gain the strongest support,’ says Oskar Lindgren, PhD student in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development at the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University, who led the study published in the Nature journal Humanities & Social Sciences Communications.
