Research theme "Money and life"

Uppsala University presents a monthly research theme with researchers and projects representing the theme.

Money and life

Money is closely bound up with people’s everyday life, health and opportunities. Here we have brought together research from Uppsala University that shows how economic conditions affect people’s lives – now and historically. Researchers explain how we are moulded by differences in income, education and housing – and propose solutions. New construction in an area can reduce segregation, for example.

Money and life – Uppsala University

Researchers from Economic History on the theme Money and life:

Lars Magnusson:

Throughout the autumn, I received a constant barrage of concerned questions regarding the enormous attention being paid to artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Is it truly beneficial, or could it be a bubble that will soon burst? Lars Magnusson, Professor of Economic History, presents his perspective on the matter in a column.

Arvand Mirsafian:

20th century Swedish labour market policy was not solely shaped by inter-class cooperation, but also by tough conflicts. Industrial rationalisation and investments in new technology were met with protests from workers. A new doctoral thesis reveals parallels between technological changes during 1920-1950 and the transition we face today with, for example, artificial intelligence and automation.

Coming themes

  • April: AI in the service of humanity
  • May: Sex, for better or worse
  • June: Out in our pasture
