On 28 April, the Department of Economics held its annual Alumni Talks, a lecture series where doctoral students have the opportunity to meet alumni and learn from their experiences on the job market after graduation. This year’s speakers were Tove Eliasson, an analyst specialising in sustainable regional development at Region Sörmland, and Maximiliano Sosa Andrés, a risk analyst at Riverty.

Maximiliano Sosa Andrés completed his PhD in 2023 and subsequently started working at Riverty. In 2025, he will begin a new role as an senior analyst at TF Bank. In his presentation, he spoke about his journey to employment after completing his doctorate. He emphasised the importance of applying widely and to focus on the knowledge one has acquired during the PhD that can help the company where one is applying for a job. He also highlighted transferable skills, such as project management, multitasking, and presentation techniques, which are often in demand on the job market and which researchers are well-trained in.

Tove Eliasson earned her PhD in 2014 and has since held a variety of positions, including researcher at the Swedish Social Insurance Inspectorate and investigative secretary at the Swedish Government Offices. She currently works as an analyst in sustainable regional development at Region Sörmland. In her talk, she discussed how a doctorate in economics can be applied in areas one might not initially consider to help address societal challenges. Tove particularly emphasised the value of being able to communicate complex issues to a range of stakeholders – a skill that researchers can actively develop to stand out in the job market.
