About the dissertation

Dogan Gülümser's dissertation has the title Wage Setting and the Gender Wage Gap: Essays on Inequality in Imperfect Labor Markets. The dissertation consists of three essays that examine different aspects of labor market imperfections and their implications for wage inequality across individuals and genders.

The first essay examines a novel source of employer hiring uncertainty - firms' previous experience in hiring for a particular occupation – and shows how it affects match outcomes and contributes to wage inequality among similar workers. The second essay documents how firm-specific wage premiums contribute to the gender wage gap through sorting and pay-setting channels across eleven advanced economies. The third essay show that men and women respond differently to improvements in outside options, and that these differential responses contribute to the gender pay gap.
