Abstract: Using fantasy/science fiction writer Andy Duncan's work as a case study, this paper explores how the traditional legend (folk narratives told as true) offers writers resources beyond just traditional motifs such as the vampire. These affordances extend to the extra-narrative patterns of behavior based on legends that folklorists call ostension. This paper is part of a larger project analyzing relationships between legends and fiction writing in "legend webs."
