Abstract
Isaac Pocock’s 1818 adaptation of Walter Scott’s Rob Roy was one of the most popular stage works of nineteenth-century Britain. It had enormous cultural influence, fashioning a notion of Scottish national identity. This paper draws on eco-philosophy to explore the elemental characteristics of geology as they appear in James Hutton’s Theory of the Earth (1788) and examine how Pocock’s play renders these same characteristics theatrically.
