Paul White, University of Cambridge: "The emotional specimen: Darwin, Duchenne, and the science of expression"
Abstract
How were feeling subjects converted into emotional objects? What models of emotion underlay this conversion? And what are the implications of the science of expression for emotional experience? I will address these questions through the methods and tools used to study emotional states by Darwin and his contemporary, the French physician Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne, especially the use of electro-physiology, natural historical observation, and photography. I will use the concept of the specimen, as it was applied in medicine and natural history, to focus these questions.
