Professor Ash Amin is renowned for his work on urban infrastructure, multiculturalism, and the politics of commons. His writings on cities, identity and belonging form a comprehensive geography of modern living, which is deeply sensitive to the fragility and relational constitution of social and cultural life. In the last two decades, he has worked on the dynamics of coexistence between strangers in cities, combining ethnography and theoretical approaches that bridge cultural, political and social theory. Among his most recent books are Land of Strangers (Polity), Arts of the Political (Duke UP, with N. Thrift), and Seeing Like a City (Polity, with N. Thrift).

Ash Amin holds the 1931 Chair of Geography at the University of Cambridge. He is a former Foreign Secretary of the British Academy and was the Founding Executive Director of the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 2015.

The 2021 Olof Palme Guest Professorship is hosted by the Department of History of Science and Ideas, Uppsala University. It is part of the collaborative research initiative "Thinking Publics, Building Society", which aims to advance an historical understanding of anti-public ideas and forms of anti-institutional activism and belonging in post-1989 Europe.
