What is the future of Holocaust research in an increasingly fragmented European continent? How have different countries dealt with the issue of collaboration during the Holocaust? How can we deal with sensitive personal data when studying the Holocaust. These topics will be discussed during a seminar that begins with highlighting the recent lawsuit against Holocaust historians in Poland.
The recent lawsuits for libel against historians Barbara Engelking and Jan Grabowski have surprised many international observers, causing concerns about developments in the country. Scholars have complained about the state of academic freedom, particularly where the interference of state authority in the writing of history is concerned. However, the developments in Poland are not an isolated phenomenon, but part of European-wide processes in recent years that have led to an increase in debates regarding the Holocaust. The issue of collaboration on state and individual levels has caused debate, giving rise to methodological and ethical challenges that face scholars dealing with micro-level data.

How can we deal with sensitive personal data when studying the Holocaust? These topics will be discussed during the online seminar "European Topography(ies) of Holocaust Research? The Engelking-Grabowski Case in Light of the Nationalisation of European Collective Memory”, scheduled for 8 April 2021 at 09.15–12.00.
The roundtable will begin with short presentations that deal with recent developments in debates and controversies concerning the Holocaust, followed by a short summary and a Q&A session.
