Topic: Photography, Dissent and Human Rights
Description: This talk is concerned with photography as a social practice and human rights as political, beyond the politics of pity that dominates the visual history of human rights. It discusses the conditions for our understanding of particular photography as apolitical representations of human rights violations and the limits of thinking about photography through a political-aesthetic dichotomy. Another question concerns where, if not in representation, the political power of photography can be located, and how photographic engagements contests distances in time and space that is usually assumed between the photographed/the victim of human rights violations and the spectator/general public. It proposes to think simultaneously about public dissent and human rights politics through photography and the visual.
