Erik Hansson, postdoc, presents a text: "The pros and cons of swimming halls: A place between necessary welfare infrastructure and impossible luxury in Sweden."
Abstract: By presenting to you a summary on my previous research on swimming halls and swimming culture in Swden, I want to get help from y'all with feedback on how to maximise my research proposal for a project aimed to understand how (and why) swimming halls (municipal bathhouses with pools) are (re)produced in contemporary Sweden as both physical buildings and social spaces by social actors (institutions, positions, and identities). While Sweden has a dominant swimming culture, SHs have become emblematic for challenges regarding economic, social, and environmental sustainability, as they are very expensive and energy-consuming buildings. The cold climate favors indoor constructions of public pools, which increases corrosion and health risks. Yet SHs are also unique public sites for all ages and bodies, visited both for recreation, rehabilitation, education, exercise and play.
Chair TBD.
