Lena Claesson-Welsh awarded the Björkén Prize
Lena Claesson-Welsh is acknowledged for her seminal work in vascular biology where her studies have contributed to a deeper understanding of vascular biology principles that have paved the way for important medical breakthroughs.
Her work has mainly focused on growth factors and signalling pathways that regulate the formation of new blood vessels, and how blood vessel permeability can be controlled in health and disease.
The Björkén prize is one of Uppsala University’s largest prizes for outstanding research. It was awarded for the first time in 1902, but only every third year for work in the field of medicine. Twice before has the medicine prize been given to women. The total prize amount is just over SEK 300 000 and this year the prize is shared between Lena Claesson-Welsh and Dan I Andersson, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology.
