Clinical Academic Groups (CAG) is a concept that exists in several countries in Europe and as the first university in Sweden, Uppsala University together with Uppsala University Hospital has now started the first in Uppsala. The aim is to create conditions for collaboration between clinical and basic science researchers in the same subject area, and thus find solutions to specific healthcare problems.

In the first call for funds to set up CAGs, two groups have been awarded grants, one of which is led by Niklas Dahl and Åsa Johansson at IGP. Their goal is to develop and validate methods that, based on the individual’s combination of inherited gene variants, can predict the risk of common diseases. In doing so, they hope to contribute to personalised medical assessment, follow-up and possible preventive measures for a larger number of patients.

In the autumn 2025, a new call for funding for additional CAGs will likely be launched.
