Verónica Rendo receives associate senior lecturer grant

Currently, the Swedish Research Council has an initiative for recruiting associated senior lecturers. In the first of several planned calls for applications, Verónica Rendo is one of in total 22 Swedish researchers who have been granted funding.
Verónica Rendo’s research focuses on the development of brain tumours and their resistance to treatment. The awarded grant will be used to explore a new strategy for treating diffuse midline glioma. This is the form of cancer that causes the highest number of disease-related deaths among children in Sweden and Europe.
“I was incredibly happy and proud when I received the news. This is not only a recognition of our research programme, but also an important step towards independence and to qualify for a position as a senior lecturer within the next few years. It provides a clear direction and long-term perspective in a career path that can sometimes feel uncertain,” says Veronica Rendo.

The Research Council’s initiative is part of the Government’s assignment to establish a programme for strategic recruitment, with a particular focus on the national career development position of associate senior lecturer.
The aim is to strengthen higher education institutions’ ability to recruit outstanding researchers early in their careers and to create long-term conditions for research of the highest scientific quality. Scientific quality, researcher mobility and international experience have been key factors in the assessment.
In the current call, 109 applications were submitted, out of which 22 have been awarded. Four of these were granted researchers at Uppsala University. The grants are for five years and amount to SEK 15 million.
