April 2016 MCS Stockholm study visit
Every year, the students of the European Media Studies course, together with their lecturers, Göran Svensson and Nico Carpentier, visit a European city. As the student group of this course is truly international, with 19 students coming for (amongst other countries) the USA, China, France, Finland and Hungary, this year's study visit was to Stockholm.
The course uses a culturalist approach to focus on the relationship of communicational places with politics, economics and aesthetics. During this 3-day study visit, which took place from 5 to 7 April 2016, six communicational places were visited: the MCN United Screens, the community media tv station Open Channel Stockholm, the Army museum, the Vasa museum, Filmstaden in Råsunda and the Mall of Scandinavia.
These study visits, that consist out of site visits and conversations with guides and visitors, are then used as case studies for student assignments, focusing on the interrelationship of the cultural, the political, the economic and the aesthetic.
