Respublika! Participation Matters, curated by Nico Carpentier, opens

On 8 December 2017, the art exhibition “Participation Matters” opened in the NeMe Arts Centre (NAC), in Limassol. On display are 14 art projects of the Respublika! project, curated by the Uppsala University professor Nico Carpentier.

On the same day, 8 December, the one-week Respublika! Festival started. During this Festival week, 15 different events took place in Limassol and Nicosia, combining film screenings, artist’s talks, workshops and performances.

The Respublika! online platform also contains a series of photographs of the opening.

Respublika! is an art project that wants to engage in a discussion on democracy and participation. It uses two strategies. It gives the floor to artists who want to reflect themselves on what democracy and participation means in today’s world. And it highlights a series of participatory art works, where artists work together with ordinary (and not so ordinary) people to produce art.

The curator, Nico Carpentier, who has lived and worked in Cyprus says: “This exhibition, and the festival, gives all visitors a wonderful opportunity to see how complex and wide-reaching democracy is, and how there are so many different ways of involving and empowering people.”

Also included in the exhibition is an installation by Nico Carpentier, entitled Mirror Palace of Democracy. This installation was created with the support of the Uppsala Stadsteater, production assistant Siddharth Chadha and actors Emil Brulin, Vaia Doudaki, Åsa Forsblad Morisse, Gary Gumpert and Annika Waern.

The Respublika! exhibition “Participation Matters” opened on 8 December 2017, with a reception at 8pm, and will run until 19 January 2018. The Respublika! Festival started on 8 December 2017, and will run until 16 December 2017.

Respublika! is supported by the Cultural Services of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture, Medochemie, Sheila Pinkel, Free University Brussels (VUB), Uppsala University, Cyprus Community Media Centre and Home for Cooperation.
