Seminar: Intersectionality – Experiences of inclusion and exclusion

The seminar focused on intersectionality and how the different forms of discrimination and exclusion combine, overlap, or intersect. The speakers examined intersectionality in and beyond feminist studies as well as in political practices. Additionally, the presentations as well as the inputs from participants attempted to expand the concept and praxis of intersectionality in media studies as a tool to analyse the complexity of multiple identities and their relations to power in a mediated social world.

The organising team consisted out of Blerjana Bino and Kirill Filimonov, with the support of Nico Carpentier.

Speakers

The seminar had three keynote speakers:

• Nina Lykke, Professor of Gender Studies, Linköping University, Sweden, explored the genealogies of intersectionality in black US feminism (Crenshaw 1991) and from that point of departure reflected on the ways in which intersectionality has become a central part of currently strong and important social protests.
• Yasmin Jiwani, Research Chair on Intersectionality, Violence & Resistance, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada, used particular examples drawn from media representations of Indigenous and Muslim bodies, to illustrate how contextual intersectionality serves as a heuristic device, highlighting the role of hegemonic values and thereby, identifying sites of intervention.
• Nico Carpentier, Professor at the Department of Informatics and Media and Media and Communication Chair, Uppsala University, Sweden, focused on the interconnections between the discursive-material knot–a model that aims to capture the entanglement between the discursive and the material through the lenses of post-structuralist discourse theory and new materialism–and intersectionality.

Other speakers were Stefania Milan, Liza Mügge, Kirill Filimonov, Karen Celis, Irene Molina, Siddharth Chadha, Arne Hintz and Blerjana Bino.

Participants

The seminar was attended by fellow colleagues and researchers, students, as well as practitioners who shared practices and ideas on issues related to intersectionality as well as contextual dynamics of power, inequalities and marginalised communities.
