Nico Carpentier holds keynote at MeCCSA PGN conference

On 16 November 2018, Nico Carpentier held a keynote at the Post-Representative Participations conference, at the University of Brighton (UK). This conference was the joint organization of the Postgraduate Network of the British communication and media studies association MeCCSA, the Participatory Communication Research Section of the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), and the Centre for Digital Media Cultures of the University of Brighton.

Nico Carpentier's keynote talk was entitled "Maximalist Participation as the Horizon to Move Beyond Representation". The talk focused on how models of maximalist participation allow transcending the logics of representative democracy, and how the political-democratic involvement of entities from other societal fields outside institutionalized politics also allow for similar transgressions of representation. The talk ended with a reflection on the limits of maximalist participation, combined with its capacity to generate societal change as participatory fantasy.

Nico Carpentier is professor in media and communication studies at the Department of Informatics and Media, Uppsala University.
