Department in press: AI can find cancer pathologists miss

Researchers at Uppsala University have been able to find asubtle tissue changes that allow the cancer to be detected long before it becomes visible to the human eye.
- We have now shown that with the help of AI, it is possible to find signs of prostate cancer that were not observed by pathologists in more than 80 per cent of samples from men who later developed cancer, says Carolina Wählby, Professor of Quantitative Microscopy at the Department of Information Technology and SciLifeLab, who led the AI development in the study.

Forskare vid Uppsala universitet har utvecklat en AI-modell som kan identifiera tidiga tecken på prostatacancer i vävnadsprover – även när patologer bedömt dem som friska. Studien visar att AI:n upptäckte förändringar i vävnaden runt prostatakörtlarna hos över 80 procent av de män som senare utvecklade aggressiv cancer.
I samarbete med Umeå universitet analyserades biopsier från 232 män, där hälften senare insjuknade. Genom att träna AI:n på bilder från dessa prover kunde forskarna hitta subtila mönster som indikerar cancer långt innan de blir synliga för det mänskliga ögat.
Carolina Wählby, professor och ansvarig för AI-utvecklingen, menar att metoden kan bidra till tidigare upptäckt och bättre uppföljning av patienter.
