The IT-department is involved in three strategic research areas recommended for funding
The Swedish Research Council recommends that the Government award funding to 16 of the 49 applications received under the call for proposals for Strategic research areas (SFO). Uppsala University is involved in four of the areas proposed for funding, of which researchers at the Department of Information Technology are involved in three.
It is the Government that makes the final decision on funding and allocates the funds as earmarked portions of the higher education institution’s research grant. The purpose of the initiative is to increase the profiling of Swedish research to ensure continued competitiveness at the international level. The research funded through this initiative must be of the highest international quality.

Researchers from Uppsala University are main applicants on four, and co-applicants on one, of the SFOs that the Swedish Research Council recommends for funding (out of a total of 16).
Researchers at the department are involved (to varying degrees) in the following projects:
- Combating the antibiotic resistance pandemic with personalised medicine: Carolina Wählby, Thomas Schön
- Effective Crisis Management and Total Defence (EFFECT): Åsa Cajander, Jessica Lindblom, Anders Arweström-Jansson
- Research on advanced materials: HIER-UPP: Hierarkiskt optimerade material: En samlad satsning för vetenskaplig excellens, cirkularitet och Sveriges fossilfriaindustriella omvandling: Thomas Schön, Jens Sjölund
