Re‑union workshop on the future of networking brought alumni and researchers together

A re‑union workshop on the future of networking recently brought together former and current members of the communications research environment at the Department of Information Technology. The event focused both on the evolution of research and on strengthening long‑term connections between alumni and researchers.

A highly appreciated alumni event, with participants agreeing not to wait too long before meeting again.

In total, 32 alumni and collaboration partners participated, together with 12 members of the Division of Computer Systems (DoCS). Participants represented both academia and industry and came from several European countries, including Sweden, France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Spain and Denmark. Many alumni are today active in roles ranging from start‑ups to large international companies, while others have continued their careers within academia.

The aim of the workshop was to reflect on the development of computer networking within a broader systems perspective, while also providing an opportunity to reconnect former and current researchers. During the day, alumni presented their current areas of work, covering topics such as distributed systems, IT security and industrial applications. The programme also included a keynote lecture by Jon Crowcroft, University of Cambridge, followed by group discussions on future directions in networking research.

Reconnection of the research community

– We have worked together for decades, and sharing the joy of reconnecting was truly a highlight,” says Per Gunningberg, Professor Emeritus in Data Communication at the Department of Information Technology. The discussions showed both how far the field has developed and how important continued collaboration is for the future of networking research.

The workshop was very well received and highlighted the value of the department’s alumni network as a platform for long‑term collaboration, knowledge exchange and inspiration. For current PhD students, the event also provided a valuable opportunity to connect with alumni working in both academia and industry — laying a strong foundation for future reunions.

Participants from the network gathered for a re‑union focused on the future of networking research.
