SIAM Chapter

The Uppsala University Student Chapter of SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is a network for both graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in computational and applied mathematics. Every year we organize 1-2 excursions to relevant companies. All chapter members are most welcome to attend!

Excursion during the autumn term 2025

In 2025, we have visited Scania during the spring term and the next autumn term excursion is being planned. Read about our visit to Scanina below.

Recent activities (March 2025 - Oct 2017)

Excursion to Scania (March 2025)

After some delays, we finally visited Scania in Södertälje. After a morning full of information about different types of research in their Research & Development department and how jobs in the industry can look like after the PhD, we got to the most fun part of the programme: test driving different types of trucks and buses!

Excursion to Elekta (March 2024)

We visited Elekta in their beautiful new office in Stockholm. They demonstrated their Leksell Gamma Knife, presented the Cone Beam CT and their work (and collaboration with UU IT department!) from radiation physics to algorithms and patient applications. We also had the pleasure of meeting with the company CEO, Gustaf Salford, as seen below.

Excursion to Arriver (Nov 2022)

After two years of postponing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we finally spent a few hours with the ML engineers of Arriver (formerly Veoneer). They gave us insights into the automatic processing of real-time images in self-driving vehicles and the related challenges. Several employees also hold a PhD and discussing their current projects and working environment with respect to their academic background was very valuable.

Excursion to SEB (Nov 2019)

We were glad to spend a day at SEB in their office by Kungsträdgården, Stockholm. We got to meet former Ph.D. students from the department and listen to multiple interesting talks on deep learning within algorithmic trading, credit risk, ethics in AI and data science, and smart beta investing.

Excursion to BCG Gamma (April 2018)

We were invited to visit Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Gamma in Stockholm where they introduced the company with two cases that BCG Gamma consultant worked with. A senior data scientist with Ph.D. background told us how he decided to join the Gamma-team. Also, we learned how the career path and recruitment process is in BCG.

Excursion to Lloyd´s Register (Oct 2017)

We visited Lloyd's Register in Sundbyberg where they presented their solution on risk analysis for nuclear power plant.They also told us about dynamic risk assessment and RAMS analysis within train. Finally, we learned about LR as a company, their business verticals, type of business and career opportunities.

Excursion to Spotify (March 2017)

We had the chance to visit Spotify Headquarters in Stockholm where they told us about some Machine Learning techniques that are used to analyze and classify their music.

Excursion to Google (Nov 2016)

We had the pleasure to visit Google at their office in Stockholm. We had a quick tour of the offices and were introduced to efficient signal processing techniques used in WebRTC and Google Hangouts.

Seminar with Kateryna Mishchenko at ABB (June 2016)

June 18 we hosted a seminar with Kateryna Mishchenko from ABB, Västerås, who told us about activities at Corporate Research. In particular, we learned about research on numerical optimization.

Excursion to DICE (Oct 2015)

We visited Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment (DICE) in Stockholm, where we were introduced to the company, gaming development, and efficient methods for simulation of ocean waves.

Excursion to FOI (May 2015)

We had the opportunity to visit the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) in Kista. They presented a variety of research projects that they are working on. We were also given a tour in their labs.

SIAM Seminar with Marco Kupianien (Dec 2014)

Dr. Marco Kupiainen from Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) told us about computational research activities at SMHI.

SIAM Seminar with Mustafa Khammash (Dec 2013)

Mustafa Khammash explained how cows regulate their blood calcium and demonstrated using a LEGO robot.

Excursion to Ericsson in Kista (Nov 2013)

Ericsson told us about the company, about working with R&D at Ericsson and about visions for the future.

Excursion to ABB in Västerås (April 2013)

ABB Corporate Research in Västerås hosted us for a visit and gave us an overview of some of their past and current research activities.

Excursion to SunGard in Stockholm (April 2012)

SunGard develops software that is used in the financial sector for trading, management and accounting. They gave a presentation of the company, their software development process and other activities.

Lunch seminar with David Sumpter (March 2012)

David Sumpter at the Department of Mathematics, Uppsala University gave the seminar Building mathematical models of anything and everything. After the seminar we all had lunch together.

Excursion to Forsmark Nuclear Power (November 2011)

We got the opportunity to visit the nuclear power plant in Forsmark. This was a full-day trip, including a guided tour in one of the nuclear reactor buildings.

SIAM Seminar with Warwick Tucker (Autumn 2011)

Warwick Tucker at the Department of Mathematics, Uppsala University, gave a seminar entitled Validated Numerics - a short introduction to rigorous computations after which we enjoyed a nice lunch together.

Excursion to Comsol (May 2011)

A visit to the offices of Comsol , creators of Comsol Multiphysics, with presentations and stimulating discussions.

Student SIAM Chapter Inaguration (April 2011)

Bertil Gustafsson, Professor Emeritus of Numerical Analysis at Uppsala University, has played an important role in putting Sweden and Uppsala on the world map in computational science. He was interviewed by Philip J. Davis as part of the project ‘The History of Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing’. More information about Bertil Gustafsson can be found on Wikipedia.

The pictures in the centre show Heinz-Otto Kreiss, Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at UCLA and KTH. He was awarded the Von Neumann Lecture in 2003. The SIAM Chapter is governed by PhD students together with a faculty advisor. The doctoral students on the board are elected at our annual meeting which is usually held at the beginning of the academic year (in August or September).
