On 3 May 2022, the European Commission proposed the European Health Data Space (EHDS). It seeks to address the data-sharing challenges illuminated by the Covid-19 pandemic and heal some fragmentations associated with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). One of the central components of the proposal is the secondary use of electronic health data – a new mechanism that establishes new data sharing obligations across Europe, as well as transforms the protection of the rights and interests of the data subjects.
