On 31 July 2023, Professor Emeritus of Private International Law and Procedure Maarit Jänterä-Jareborg gave the prestigious opening lecture at the Hague Academy of International Law, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, on the topic:  'Women's Rights in a World in Transition: The Challenges of Private International Law'.

"In my lecture, I wanted to draw the attention of an audience of nearly 300 young lawyers and dignitaries from over 70 different countries around the world to the situation and rights of women in a world in transition and facing a challenging future. International human rights organisations report on the increasing vulnerability of women and how women's self-determination is thwarted by conservative forces. I chose to focus on women in the context of migration, such as asylum seekers, refugees, low- and well-educated women who have entered the labour market in another country, and women who have started a family across borders or live in families dispersed across different countries. The greater the differences between the country of origin and the country of destination in terms of culture, traditions and other (often religious) norms, the greater the legal challenges. I approached the problem mainly from the perspective of the UN Convention on the Rights of Women and the Elimination of Discrimination (1979), combined with regulations in the discipline of private international law and procedural law."

The lecture (in expanded form) will be published in the Hague Academy's flagship series Recueil des Cours/Collected Courses.
