Anna Jonsson Cornell appointed as expert in new committee on fundamental rights and freedoms
Anna Jonsson Cornell, professor of comparative constitutional law and associate professor of constitutional law at the Department of Law, Uppsala University, has been appointed as an expert in the "Committee on some issues concerning fundamental rights and freedoms (Ju 2023:05)".
A parliamentary committee will investigate some questions about the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms under Chapter 2 of the Instrument of Government. The committee will consider whether certain aspects of this protection should be changed and whether completely new fundamental rights and freedoms should be introduced.
Among other things, the committee will assess:
- whether new fundamental rights and freedoms - a right to abortion, a right to judicial review and general protection against discrimination - should be added to Chapter 2 of the Instrument of Government,
- whether the right to nationality should be amended to allow for the withdrawal of nationality from dual nationals who have committed systemic crime, crimes against humanity or certain other international crimes or other very serious crimes, or whose nationality has been acquired as a result of false information or other improper conduct,
- whether there should be increased possibilities to restrict freedom of association in relation to criminal organisations; and
- what general conditions should apply in order for a restriction on the freedom to conduct business and the protection of property to be acceptable.
The committee shall submit proposals for constitutional amendments that it considers justified.
