Two new honorary doctors at the Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law in Uppsala has appointed Professor Vesna Rijavec, Faculty of Law, University of Maribor (Slovenia), and Anders Eka, Justice and President of the Supreme Court, as new honorary doctors.


Vesna Rijavec is awarded an honorary doctorate for her successful management of several European comparative research projects, mainly in civil procedural law, and private international law and international civil procedure.

Vesna Rijavec is a Professor and until recently also Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Maribor, Slovenia. Several of her many research projects have involved Sweden and the Faculty of Law at Uppsala University. Vesna Rijavec is a prominent and versatile legal scholar and research leader. The numerous projects under Vesna Rijavec's leadership have included different types of research activities and training programmes, conferences, and expert meetings as well as numerous publications and wide scientific networks. Through her own very extensive legal writing, she has made important contributions not only in the field of comparative law, Europeanised civil procedure, or private international law and international civil procedure but also in such diverse areas of law as enforcement law, notarial law, inheritance and other economic family law, medical law, and real estate law.

Anders Eka is awarded an honorary doctorate for his important contributions to the field of constitutional law, where the work to modernise the constitution and strengthen the judiciary has enriched not only the academic development and status of the field, but especially the Swedish rule of law.

Anders Eka has been a member of the Supreme Court since 2013 and its President since 2018. In addition to his judicial career as a judge at the Svea Court of Appeal and a judge at the Stockholm District Court, Anders Eka has also been a legal expert at the Ministry of Justice and head of the Office of the Chancellor of Justice. In addition, he has made significant contributions as principal secretary in the Constitutional Inquiry 2004-2008, which led to the 2010 revision of the Instrument of Government, the most important of Sweden's four constitutional acts. He has subsequently had further assignments as specialist, expert, and chairman of government inquiries in the field of constitutional law, such as the Judicial Law Inquiry and the 2020 Constitutional Committee.  Anders Eka's commitment and contribution to constitutional law and the foundations of the Swedish rule of law in a turbulent time inspires researchers and is appreciated in broader legal circles.

The university’s Honorary Doctors are awarded honorary degrees at the Winter Conferment Ceremony, which will take place on 26 January 2024 in the University Main Building in Uppsala.
