We are pleased to welcome five new doctoral students, admitted to our sought-after doctoral programme in the latest annual and general doctoral admission round, as well as in a joint call for applications with the Swedish Defence University in Stockholm.
Below is a short presentation of the doctoral students and their projects.
Larissa Dietz, Environmental Law
Main supervisor: David Langlet
Preliminary title of the thesis: Promoting offshore wind in Europe: A comparative analysis of the legal frameworks in Europe’s pioneering states
The research project contains a comparative analysis of the laws and funding measures of Europe’s pioneering states in the renewable energy sector and (offshore) wind energy: Sweden, Germany, and the UK. Sweden reaches the highest share of renewables in Europe, Germany registers the highest cumulative wind energy capacity, and the UK is Europe’s pioneer in offshore wind. By comparing these states’ legal frameworks, the research project intends to identify best-practice laws and measures to promote the green energy transition, aiming to create a legal guide on how to enhance Europe’s offshore wind energy development with the levers of the law.
Sonja Karlsson, Public Law
Main supervisor: Olof Wilske
Assistant supervisor: Marika Ericsson (Swedish Defence University)
Preliminary title of the thesis: The Constitutional Preparedness of the Swedish Social Insurance System
The project investigates how the right to social security benefits and how the Swedish social insurance system changes during a serious crisis, war or danger of war as well as what Sweden's constitutional preparedness looks like, namely to what degree the regulations that may be needed in those situations are prepared beforehand. The project's focus is on the benefits that are regulated in the Swedish Social Insurance Code, including the state pension, as well as on the defence benefits that are paid to soldiers in the Swedish Home Guard and to those obligated to serve in Sweden's total defence.
Ludvig Konnebäck, Criminal Law
Main Supervisor: Magnus Ulväng
Preliminary title of the thesis: Protected Legal Interests in Criminal Law
The purpose of the project is to study the relationship between criminal acts and the “interests” that is protected by criminal acts. Main focus is on the problem of “distance” between criminal acts and interests, usually referred to as “remoteness problems”. The primary goal of the thesis is to analyze what constitutes this “distance” (and how) and to study different models and theories on how the distance can, in lack of better words, be measured.
Kalo Orfali, Public International Law
Main Supervisor: Inger Österdahl
Assistand Supervisor: Jann Kleffner (Swedish Defence University)
Preliminary title of the thesis: Artificial Battleground: The Legal Implications of AI-Enhanced Cyber Operations by State and Non-State Actors
The dissertation explores the complex legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in cyber operations conducted by state and non-state actors. It examines how AI impacts attribution, motives, and accountability in cyberspace, and analyzes the adequacy of current international legal frameworks in addressing these emerging threats. The research aims to provide insights into potential regulatory approaches and legal reforms necessary to effectively govern AI-enhanced cyber operations in an evolving digital landscape.
Johan Rosell, Jurisprudence
Main Supervisor: Minna Gräns
Preliminary title of the thesis: Rights and legal personhood in the post-biological era
A post-biological era of genetic and technological enhancement of humans, as well as artificial intelligence showcasing human characteristics, may challenge our conceptions about what it means to be human and what should give rise to i.a. rights. How should rights and legal personhood be understood in such a time? Furthermore, in light of the insights made possible by modern natural science, the normative and conceptual role of consciousness in rights theory will also be examined and evaluated from both legal and philosophical perspectives.
