Welcome to the seminar series on the topic of biomedical engineering! This seminar series is brought to you by the Medtech Science and Innovation Centre with the aim of bringing together people at UU and beyond with an interest in biomedical engineering and to share news on the research that is going on across the university in this area.

The seminar will describe state-of-the-art biochemical approaches for the discovery of drugs, focusing on the use of different types of biosensors for screening and characterization of ligands that are suitable as starting points for design of efficient and safe drugs. Biosensors have a unique capability to detect interactions between low affinity ligands and their targets as well as resolve mechanistically complex interactions. This is critical for the identification of drugs that have novel modes of action and can address diseases that are not druggable with standard approaches. Another topic will be the design of proteins with anti-inflammatory and adhesive properties suited for medical devices. Specifically, engineering and enzymatic post-translational modification of recombinant proteins mimicking mussel adhesive proteins. This work involves establishing procedures for industrial pilot scale production and purification of disordered recombinant proteins and development of bioreactors with immobilized enzymes. The methodological principles can be translated to production of other types of protein-based materials.
