Prof. Alon Pinto from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel gives a ledture with the title "But this is not Mathematics!” – Opportunities and challenges underlying the communication between mathematicians and schoolteachers about mathematics teaching". Welcome to join!

Abstract: Mathematicians and schoolteachers are key stakeholders in mathematics education, yet the communication between these two communities is typically quite limited, and both sides express doubts about the actual contribution of such communication when it takes place, for example in the context of schoolteacher preparation. Evidently, communication between mathematicians and schoolteachers is often fraught by issues of power and trust, as well as by the vastly different perspectives within these two communities on mathematics and its teaching. In my talk, I will exemplify these different perspectives in the context of concrete instructional situations and discuss what I learned over the last decade from various attempts to promote communication between mathematicians and schoolteacher that is oriented towards mutual learning.

Prof. Pinto did his PhD in 2011 under the direction of Tsachik Gelander, titled Product Decompositions and Splitting Theorems of Busemann Non-Positively Curved Spaces. He is now mostly concerned with research in mathematical education, as evidenced by the topic of the talk.
