The Department of Mathematics hereby invites all interested to a docentship lecture in subject Mathematics with Associate Professor Michele Del Zotto.
Chairperson: Professor Volodymyr Mazorchuk
Representative of the Docentship Committee: Professor Nataša Sladoje
Abstract: In this lecture I will give a pedagogical introduction to symmetries. Symmetries are powerful mathematical structures that organize our understanding of many concepts, both in mathematics and in physics. I will discuss examples and definitions of symmetries in various contexts, and derive some basic consequences. I will then discuss applications of symmetries in mathematical physics, with special focus on the quantum realm, closely related to topics of current research.
The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.
