About the film
‘Counted Out’ is an American film that premiered in 2024 and has not been released publicly but only shown at booked screenings. The film asks why some people turn away from mathematics at an early age and unwittingly close the doors to exciting careers in science, technology, medicine and business.
Regardless of other interests and career choices, the film also highlights ‘mathematical literacy’ as a crucial factor for democracy and economic opportunity. In an age driven by technology, data and algorithms, maths literacy determines who understands what is happening, can make the right decisions and has the power to shape our world.
The biggest crises of our time are examined from a mathematical perspective. Political polarisation. Racial prejudice. Social injustice. Economic inequality. Climate change. And a global pandemic.
Ultimately, it's a film that asks a question fundamental to democracy: if we can't understand a system that governs us, how much power do we really have?
