The Department of Mathematics hereby invites all interested to a docentship lecture in subject Mathematics with Associate Professor Hankyung Ko.

Chairperson: Professor Volodymyr Mazorchuk

Representative of the Docentship Committee: Professor Nataša Sladoje

Abstract: The lecture is an introduction to alternating sign matrices. Alternating sign matrices were discovered in the study of Dodgson's condensation algorithm for computing determinants and parametrize the hidden terms in the Leibniz formula. Alternating sign matrices also appear in various seemingly unrelated places. We will discuss in particular how alternating sign matrices complete permutations in a way similar to how real numbers complete rational numbers.

The lecture is an obligatory teaching test for those applying for admittance as docent and it should be possible for students and others with basic academic education in the relevant field to follow it. The lecture lasts 40-45 minutes with subsequent discussion. The lecture will be given in English.

Welcome!
