We will revive an area in mathematical physics that, to a large extent, came to define ergodic theory in the beginning of the 1970s, when Ruelle, Bowen, Sinai, and Walters used transfer operator techniques to study dynamical systems whose invariant measures were the equilibrium measures for Ising models with long-range interactions, studied by Dyson and others. Ergodic theory and statistical mechanics ceased to interact with the same intensity after this short but influential period. In recent years, however, there have been new developments in this area which have been of interest in both communities, and in this workshop we will address some new directions, recent results, and open problems.
