Abstract: A long-standing open problem in algebra is the Birkhoff problem (1935) of classifying embeddings of abelian groups. This is an instance of understanding the monomorphism category of a quiver (or more generally a
species) over a ring, which has connections to Gorenstein homological algebra and topological data analysis. In this talk, I will present joint work with Nan Gao, Sondre Kvamme, and Chrysostomos Psaroudakis on a functorial approach to understanding this category.
