Professor and senior physician Johan Sundström, at the Department of Medical Sciences, is recognised for his pioneering developments in precision medicine, the application of which has significantly transformed hypertension care globally. Johan has published the first clinical trial with a design that can establish or rule out a potential for precision medicine in complex diseases.

His research on strategies for selecting people for treatment has been recognised internationally and one of Johan's papers has been named the ‘most important paper for general medicine in the last decade’. Johan's research has greatly influenced all modern clinical guidelines for hypertension. This paradigm-breaking work will have a major impact on both clinical care and future clinical precision medicine research in complex diseases.

The award ceremony will take place during Uppsala University's Vice Rector's summer dinner on June 12.

Background

In 2009, the Regional Council established a research prize for patient-centred research. Prefects responsible for clinical areas nominate candidates. An external review committee with broad clinical scientific expertise is asked to rank the nominees according to the
criteria established by the Regional Board.

Region Uppsala's prize for achievements in clinical research is awarded to employees of Region Uppsala who, through their research, have contributed to significant improvements in health care.
