Based on the proposal of the international review panel, the University Medical Board has decided to grant Anna Rostedt Punga, Department of Medical Sciences, and Stefan Schwartz, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM), project ‘Facial Nerve Palsy: A Comprehensive Exploration for Precision Medicine (FACE)’ funds for Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs). CAGs is a joint effort and is funded by the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital, Region Uppsala.

The aim is to improve diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation for facial nerve palsy, a condition causing one-sided facial paralysis that impacts appearance, emotional expression, and mental well-being. The project investigates both viraland autoimmune causes, using molecular and electrophysiological methods to identify early biomarkers and improve individualized treatment. Digital tools and educational materials will be developed for both patients and healthcare professionals. The work supports Uppsala University Hospital’s role in nationally specialized care for facial nerve palsy.
