Dean Mathias Hallberg: We must enhance the visibility of the Faculty of Pharmacy
On 1 July, new managements were installed at Uppsala University's faculties and disciplinary domains. The new dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy is Mathias Hallberg, Professor of Molecular research on drug dependence, whose first task is to guide our operations through the ongoing reorganization.

“The move of seven research groups has been preceded by intensive preparatory work and will in all probability turn out well. Next, we must ensure that everyone feels welcome and included in their new departments, and give each employee increased knowledge of the research and activities that take place within the faculty. My ambition is to stimulate meetings, close dialogue between departments as well as heads of department and an increased communication,” says Mathias Hallberg, new dean at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
With him, Mathias Hallberg brings a broad experience of collaboration and external activities, including the position as chairman of the regional forum U-FOLD as well as in the Uppsala node of the ULF project. His curriculum vitae also includes many years of involvement in the faculty's educational activities. Mathias Hallberg is currently PI of a research project within drug development which, in collaboration with the DDD platform at Scilifelab, has now reached the EXIT phase.
“I have always been interested in both research, education and collaboration. As dean, having the opportunity to get involved in and connect these three areas is very motivating to me. Of course, I also hope that my previous experiences will be of constructive benefit to both our faculty and everyone who contributes to its activities.”
Two months after the new management took office, work is underway to set the right direction for the Faculty of Pharmacy. The key words include expanded contact areas with potential partners: National and international, but also within the faculty's own premises at the Uppsala Biomedical Center.
“I see great value in strengthening our faculty's internal and external visibility. It will contribute to increase the number of applications for our educations. Also, increased knowledge of what is going on in nearby research environments is a reliable generator for developed collaboration and future synergy effects. Once we get there, we can take full advantage of our faculty's unique ability to mobilize all the competencies required to develop a drug from laboratory to clinical treatment.”
The new Vice-Rector in the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy is Mats Larhed, Professor of Medicinal chemistry. After many years of conducting research at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and his previous assignment as Deputy Vice-Rector, Mats is also a familiar face to many of the Faculty of Pharmacy's employees.
“The fact that our new Vice-Rector is from the Faculty of Pharmacy means that he has extensive knowledge of our organization and operations. Above all, however, I am convinced that the work of Mats Larhed and the management will contribute to a very positive development for the entire Disciplinary Domain,” says Mathias Hallberg.
