The BCG vaccine, developed exactly one century ago, is every year given to 100 million children as protection against tuberculosis. Observational studies now show that countries with routine BCG vaccination have significantly fewer reported cases and deaths in covid-19. Aiming to determine whether it is the BCG vaccine that provides protection during the pandemic, the research consortium "BCG revaccination for healthcare professionals in SARS-CoV-2 pandemic" is currently conducting a Phase 3 clinical study with the help of 1000 employees in South African healthcare.
Ulrika Simonsson, Professor of Pharmacokinetics at Uppsala University, and her research team participates in the consortium, using advanced pharmacometric models to predict whether BCG vaccination can prevent mortality or alleviate disease when infected with covid-19.
In the webinar Fighting the covid pandemic using pharmacometrics, Ulrika Simonsson, Rob van Wijk and Laurynas Mockeliunas, all researcher at the Faculty of Pharmacy, will present their work in the project.
